I am trying to replace an impeller on my 1968 Merc model 39 3.9 hp and can't get the lower unit off. After removing the nut, do I also have to disconnect the shift mechanism (shift rod or linkage) before the lower unit drops out? If so, how? Seloc manual does not mention a shift diconnect for this.

Much appreciated.

There are two nuts that attach the lower unit on your 39. One in front just below the clamps and one in the rear underneath the cavitation plate.

The shift rod is not actually attached to the mechanism up top, merely splined into the linkage, and it should just slide out.

- Scott
