When I turn the key on my 1968 Evinrude 85hp motor, all I get is a loud buzz like click coming from the engine. What I wanted to know is if this is due to a faulty starter or starter solenoid? I'd like it to be the solenoid since they are so much cheaper. :D

Re: 1968 Starter

I just did what I'm supposed to do before posting a question. I read the FAQ. I haven't done the test yet, but the FAQ explains that a simple voltage test is all you need to perform to find out. But I have a feeling its my starter....

sounds like either a bad connection from battery or a bad solinoid, make sure you have a good ground, clean connections, make sure the battery is full charge and healthy, one little test you can do is take a wire and short across the to large posts on the solinoid (stay clear of the flywheel) and if it turns over from there it is the solinoid. look at the starter connection and make sure it's not corroded bad connections and low voltage will burn your starter up. good luck with it, electial problems can be hair pullers.

just my input, have a 1969 115 ob that hates a little corrosion,it might not look to dirty but i find these old motors love fresh connections!keep it clean and i bet youll find its the problem!
