Went to change the lower gear lube in grandpa's
1969 20 hp merc and the dealer gave me quicksilver premium gear lube. This stuff is oil and the stuff in the motor is a grease.
Which is right? And how would I get the old grease out? Thanks alot. You guys are great!

Welcome to iboats and who put grease in there?

There is a thick almost grease-like gearlube called 104. It's supposed to be for small horsepower non-shift motors. I also had a service station owner fill his gearcase with axle grease. The grease didn't circulate and the bearings burned up.

The stuff you got is right. You might be able to get that grease out of there with a little compressed air. If you can regulate it to 15psi, please do. The seals could blow if you give it too much pressure. Then fill with gearlube and run it. You may need to change it a few times to get all the grease dissolved into the lube so it will drain out with it.

The gear lube is correct. I have no idea as to how to get the grease out without taking it apart. Possible, get as much out as you can, fill it with the gear lube, run it a few times, drain and start over. You will have to do this several times I think, but should get most of it out. Also. I would watch for a leaky seal. Maybe thats why they put it in there. Good luck.
