I changed the points, condensor, and coils. It started and sputtered for about a minute at a time. I cleaned out the fuel pump and put on a carburerator kit. Now it only starts for a few seconds with "quick-start" and dies. It is not getting fuel. If I keep spraying quick-start it runs. The bulb is tight and remains so. CAn the fuel pump still be messed up?

Points set at .020? Plugs at proper gap and correct plug? Re-clean carb and pay particular attention to the float level and float needle for sticking. Did you use carb cleaner and blow out ALL the passages with compressed air? Loosen float bowl and see if there is gas in it. If not, replace the bulb. If so, you may have a stuck float needle. I would clean it again... Also, check the float itself for fuel in it by shaking it, unless they gave you a new one with the kit.

Do NOT use starting fluid!!!!! Use pre-mix in a spray bottle to get her going. Starting fluid has no lubrication properties and can score cylinder walls and other parts in the combustion chamber...

If you want to check the operation of the fuel pump, remove the fuel line from the carburetor and hang it over the side of the cowling into a clean coffee can. Prime the fuel line and note when fuel comes out of the fuel line. Then pull the motor over with the starter cord. Fuel should spurt out of the fuel line. If you're not getting fuel that far, then you've got an issue with the fuel pump, or maybe even the tank/fuel line. If you're getting fuel to the end of the fuel line but not into the carb, then your issue is in the carb...
- Scott

Thanks for the reply, The points and plugs are set correctly. Fuel is getting into the bowl. I can remove the high speed screw and fuel escapes. I replaced the float and needle with the carb kit. I blew out every orifice I could find. Thanks for the info about the pre-mix.

There was a hole on top that I think needed a lead plug, so I plugged it. There is also another on the intake side which I left open.

Thanks for the info on the fuel pump testing, I will check it out tonight.

This carb has a high speed fuel plug. It is set deep down and cannot be removed. Is fuel supposed to go through or around this plug or should it remain fixed? I have soaked it with carb cleaner.

I pump the bulb and it gets tight as the bowl fills. What is the path or process that makes the fuel go out into the engine?

That lead plug you put in on the top of the carb might have been a vent hole for the main diffuser tube, idle ciruit, or bowl vent. It would explain why the short start/runs! It fires up, draws fuel and creats a vacuum, then dies.. Try removing that plug and running to see if it fixes it. The Johnson/Evinrude site has excellent parts location diagrams to check if there is supposed to be one there. You may have helped me come up with a solution to my problem too! Going to check out that site right now!!!!

It sounds like you two guys have the same problem. This guy says he can't get his orfice plug out. True, you are supposed to have a special screwdriver, but..
As I said, all the fuel has to go thru the tiny hole in that plug. If there is ANY crud in it, it won't run.

And yes, don't be plugging holes that aren't supposed to be plugged.
