I had to replace the ignition switch because of a lost key. since doing so it will not kill with the switch in the off position and I have to choke the motor to kill it. The ignition switch I replaced it with was an over the counter generic with terminals battery, ACC, Ignition & Start. The only difference between new and old is the ACC terminal, that wasn't needed. I attached the same wires to the same terminal labels between old and new. I can test for current with key on at the hot wire going to the coil and there is current, there's no current with the key off, but yet it still wants to stay running after started. Is it possible there somekind of difference between the old and new switch that I'm not getting.

Re: 1969 85 HP Johnson, will not shut off

Well not to many replies going on now to this post, "must be Mothers Day". So I'm continuing to trouble shoot. This problem doesn't make sense to my small not electrical mind. Any how previous voltmeter tests to the ignition showed me there was no current with the key off, which is correct, yet with the motor started it wouldn't turn off which means that it is getting current looped back somewhere along the wiring. What I'm thinking is that since the motor is turning that the stator is putting out volts and it must be looping back from there somehow. I started testing diodes to see if current was flowing bi-directional somewhere. I did find one under the dash that was bad. one end hooked to ignition and I don't know where the end connects to it goes into the harness that runs to the back of the boat. Well anyway I'm guessing that I might have found the problem, only thing is where do I get a replacement diode. It looks much like one of the shift diodes, a purple lead with a green stripe and a solid purple lead going into a teardrop shaped blob of plastic.

You are correct about that wiring. I have the same outboard engine. That dioade connects if I remember correct to the purple wire at the ignition switch.I think you can purchase them at Radio Shack.

I have had to install a new ignition switch and I have a black wire that looks to be a ground wire. I connected it to the m space on the switch and nothing happened. I saw smoke coming from the amplfier. I did not get the engine to engage. The starter works fine. How can I test to see if the selenoid is broke. You can e-mail me a Dlmille@aol.com

A standard ignition switch (car) will not work on a boat. A boat switch in the off position will connect 2 of the wires together whereas a car switch will just leave all the circuts open. You have to purchase the correct omc part for it to function correctly.

Goldfish.... NO offense intended. That engine requires 12v to the pulsepack when the key is ON which is unlike the ignition that came into being in 1973. Uses a entirely different ignition switch.

Gary..... You failed to wire in the blocking diode (or the diode is faulty) at the ignition switch. Without the diode, current/voltage from the charging system can flow backwards into the circuit which supplies voltage to the pulsepack.

Just want to add that I have the sister to your motor (Evinrude) I bought a factory manual (marineengine.com) and found it to answer a lot for me. It's complete with all the schematics and was worth every penny. You are lucky that Joe Reeves saw your post as he is a walking collection of all OMC manuals ever printed.( the guy knows EVERYTHING) :) I really like my old E Rude and hope you get all straightened out with yours.

Re: 1969 85 HP Johnson, will not shut off

Joe,
the whole story is that I replaced the ignition originally with a cheap $4.00 ingnition from Walmart, which turns out had a short in it. That swith would power the starter in the on position and at the start position. After testing wires for short much of a day I found a loose terminal on that ignition switch with crossing current between ignition and start position. Anyhow I beleive that I burned up that diode somehow with the cheap switch. So what I've done up till now is I picked up some diodes at Radio shack, a package of three with the highest voltage rating I could find. I bundled all 3 together attached wires to the ends and wired them in and now the ignition works like it should.
I don't know if I should leave it that way though, I just was ready to order a $60.00 blocking diode until I new for sure.

Alden,
thanks for the encouragement, I've got a ways to go on this motor. I replace the water pump and now it overheats after about 10 min. of running, and it dies on acceleration. I'll keep working on it. It was alot of fun last summer. I just need to learn it and keep figuring out the problems

Keep hanging in there gary, as alden said the manual will be the best investment you can make on the outboard.

I did get a Seloc manual first thing when I got this boat last spring. Is there a better manual? This one isn't terribly bad but it seams to cover a lot of HP and a lot of years and I have picked up on the some errors. It would be nice have something more specific to my motor.
