I started on my impeller replacement quest this afternoon. Upon the removal of the fill/drain screws in the l/u, I was greeted by a creamy looking substance! That's as far I got today!
I am going to remove the l/u tomorrow. Does this indicate a leaky head gasket? I did run it last night until my overheat light went on(3 min@ 1000rpms) so I shut it off and thus started me on my quest. I have a clymer manual but is a seloc a better manual to have?
Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated!

pjw

First the OMC manual is the best.

Next you have a leaking seal in the gearcase (creamy subatance) that probably has nothing to do with the water pump unless it is the driveshaft seal. You need to do a pressure & vacume test to determine the source of the leak. It may be as simple as leaking gaskets on the fill/drain plugs (in fact do this first before the pressure/vacume thing).

Don't start throwing parts at it until you have some clue as to what is wrong. Checking the condition of the plugs and doing a compression check will give you an idea of the overall condition of the motor including the head gasket.

Last I would replace the complete water pump and not just the impeller.
