Engine has for the most part ran very well, however there were a couple of instances last year when it just stopped just as I would begin to accelerate. It didn't sputter and die at died as if it suddenly just lost all spark. It would easaly restart after that but would repeat that several times and then it wouldn't do it for the remainder of the day. So far this year I've had my boat out twice and had this problem both times. Any ideas out there on what the problem might be?

I would start by checking the coil and amplifier
and the points. Sometimes the amplifier will intermitly fail to provide the spark that it should according to the clymer book that I have
also book says coil breakdown and wrong plugs could cause problem correct plugs for 1969 85hp is L76V no gap set on this one. Does your engine have condensors if so I would replace them as they can cause the problem and they are cheap.

I don't have the amplifier anymore, I converted it over to an automotive coil and condensor last spring and I do have the correct plugs. I guess I could try putting a new coil and condensor on. I picked it up cheap from a junk yard anyway. There is another little problem I'm haveing as well. I sold a truck this winter and went and left the only key to my boat attached to the key ring for that truck. I replaced the whole ignition switch, "seamed cheap and easy". The ignition worked fine when I started it several times in the driveway but later on when I was at the lake the ignition would not shut off and I would have to choke the motor to kill it. I've tested the switch with a VO meter and I can't find anthing wrong with it.

do not know amything about the switch but I am intrigued by the fact you changed over from a amplifier to a coil and condenser. If it is not to much trouble please explain to me how you did this as I have a 1969 55hp rude that has an amp
and if it should give me any trouble thats what I would like to do.

Pretty simple really, use a coil that doesn't have a resistor built into it. the postive side of the coil wires to the ignition which should be the hot wire to your amp. The negative side of the coil goes to you points. Then there's a condensor on the negative side going to ground.

I think I'll start a new post on the ignition. If anybody has any more input on this thing dieing on acceleration, I'll gladly hear it.
