If you are getting water in it i would just go ahead and replace the impeller and the seals. You want to make sure and replace the washers on the fill and drain holes.

After I posted my question, I saw a similar about 8 posts behind it that explained how to do the pressure test, by pumping air into the LU with a tire pump and putting it in a barrel of water. I did this, and I'm seeing big air bubbles comeing up through and behind the exhaust tube next to the drive shaft.

You may have gotten some fishing line or something in there that ruined your prop seal.

Do you think it's a prop seal? I didn't see any bubbles from inside the prop housing. I guess maybe I should just go through and replace them all.

okay, I have the seals and I have the bearing carrier pulled out from the L/U. The Seloc book says to put the outer,(back to back seals) in with triple guard grease between and gasket sealer on the out side. Is triple guard grease nown by any other name at Napa auto parts. Also the book stopped short of how you actually put the seals in. I know they look similar to wheel bearing seal which I usually use an old socket to tap those in, however the flat side of those are exposed to where that works. Also on the big O ring at the other end of the carrier. Is that coated with the grease or gasket sealer?

I have replaced all of the seals and have had the boat out about 4 times now. I'm certainly not leaking any oil from the lower end anymore, however I drained the oil and I can't tell if there's water in it or not. It's not clear like it was new and is a little creamy. Could it just be wipped with air in it? I'm not sure how water would get in if oil' not leaking out.

You will get a little lighter color like you said from the "whipping" action of the gears. When it sits for a while open your drain plug and see what color comes out. Should go back to the original color lube with a little darker hue. Mines tends toward very dark brown after a while. If it is not milky don't worry about it. If it sits for a long time (a day or two) and you undo this drain and water comes out then we will go from there. Sorry about not seeing your post on grease but was out of town for a while. Get a good factory manual. Seloc is better than nothing but awful generic.

Thanks fireman, I've got it drained in a jar now, I'm going to see if there's any separation over the next day or so.

Re: 1969 85HP johnson water in L/U

I used a harmonic balance puller with a couple of allthreads. I don't have the threaded holes so I used a nut and a washer and reached inside the carrier and put them on. It was impossible to get a strait line pull because the webs on my carrier were at just a couple of third points, but fortunatly it came out very easy. I've got another l/u that I bought for parts that I'm haveing troubles with myself, trying to get the carrier out. Try heating the outside up with a torch as you pull it.<br />You did take out the 4 bolts inside the carrier, I assume.
