I am working on a '69 85hp Johnson that is not getting any spark. When I initially started testing the engine I would hold the plugs close to the block and not get spark. Oddly though the engine started right up after re-inserting the plugs. Since that day the engine will not start. I followed the instructions in a diferent post about wiring a battery straight to the purple wire and grounding out the black and white wire to test the amp. I got a good spark from this test but all the others seem to fail. I tried the light bulb test I read about here and tested for the 250 volts when cranking the engine. Doe this mean the amp is bad?

Thanks

If I get spark out of the wire that comes out of the coil when hooking a battery to the amp and grounding the black and white wire. Doesn't that indicate that the amp is good and something must be amiss before the amp? Like the points?

It didn't seem like the points were opening at all. I set them to .010 and it started right up. Looks like I am talking to myself a bit here. But so far so good!
