Hi I have a 1969 55HP Evinrude and I have been having a no spark problem and I have replaced the CDI and now have a low spark problem. I have dun some testing and the CDI is getting good power But when I tested the wire going from the CDI to the Coil it seems to be going to Ground. When I unhook that wire and test it from the CDI I get power but when I have it hooked into the CDI my readings are all over the place. Also when unhook the wire from the CDI to the coil there is a beep coming from the Motor... (I can’t find out from where but)?? When I turn the fly-wheel the beep seems to go up and down. when I hook back up the wire from the CDI to the coil there is a spark and the beep goes away other than that I have to turn the key to the off to get rid of the beep. The coil has 2 wires coming out of it. One going to ground and one going to the CDI but they both seem to be going to ground so I believe the coil is the problem does any one out there think I am correct. Also why is it beeping when I unhook the wire going between coil and CDI?

Re: 1969 Evenrude HELP

There will be continuity between the two small (primary) wires from the coil. Check your manual and see how many ohms resistance there should be between the two. This will tell you if the coil is bad or not.
I don't know what the beeping is unless it's the hi-temp alarm and I don't know if your engine even has one.

c/6

Hooty

Re: 1969 Evenrude HELP

Ya the info I have been able to dig up about my motor says I need to get a tester for the coil. There is no information on testing procedures. It seems to me when I unplug the wire from the CDI to the coil and test the wire from the CDI and get Good Voltage (Around 7 V +)but when hooked up to the coil I get mixed readings almost like back feed I don't think that should be happing I should be seeing good voltage. IT seems to me that the CDI gets info that the points are opening and closing from the back wire with Wight stripe and than sends power to the coil (correct me if I am wrong) Witch than gives power to the spark plugs and as of now when I put my spark tester in it lights up but barley. Now I don't know if this is a good CDI but I seem to be getting something now where with the other one I had nothing so I am really hoping I don't just have another bad one. And I don’t know what else would be causing the low spark I was told maybe condensers but I can’t see that my motor has them. I believe it has the temp sensor because by the key Start it has a light that says “HOT”. Now I don’t know if that maybe Grounding out witch might be causing my problem. Here is my model number maybe if someone out there has a better manual than me maybe you can give me a way to test the coil if you don’t mind It is getting ½ way in to the season and I am really looking to getting this thing going.
