1969 Evinrude 18 HP Fastwin
18902D - E12329 Converted to Short Shaft

My lower unit was filled with gulf water. Fortunately there?s no excess slop in the meeting of shaft, bushing, or forward gear. The bushing part of the bushing/seal assy. has been grinding on the shaft though and I?m looking for someone to tell me? ?It?s going to be OK.? ?although I fear it?s not.

Any and all input appreciated.

Thanks,
Bob

That bushing head has to be badly worn also, you won't be able to hold a seal. What does the upper driveshaft, and bushing look like?

My '57 18 horse shaft looks like that too, and the driveshaft is grooved where the seal under the waterpump rides. I trailered the boat, and changed the oil every time it went out. I sold the boat, kept the motor and it will be revived one day.

I have been told one can speedy-sleeve it, or to pack the LU housing with waterproof white lithium grease. Or I will look for less worn parts!

Gotta love the sound and the way those 18's run dont ya!~

The other end of the shaft looks great; minimally scored. I do have an old but good lathe and could turn down the shaft in the scored area then fabricate a new bushing for the head assy; if I'm as good as I think I am.

Yes I do love the way those old 18's sound and hope I'll be able to hear mine again soon.

I've seen alot worse...I might just grease it up, put it all back together, and run it for a short while on the water to see if it leaks. If it doesn't leak, then just run it, but keep an eye out for replacement parts. But that's just me....anyway do you know how the water got there in the first place?

Your old but good lathe looks nicer than my old lathe. I vote for turning and re-bushing it. Lot's of satisfaction too.
