Hello ...
Someone local is selling a 1969 Evinrude 55973C..55hp outboard.. not running...is this a good project engine OR one that should be avoided...?
Is it a better outboard project than a 1970 40072A .. 40hp lark...
I know its a bigger CC but is it a better project than a Lark..? what do you guys think..?

Well, condition is everything. The 55 is somewhat more complicated, with the battery CD ignition and Hydro-Electric Shift. On the other hand, the Lark has a DC charging system, magneto, and Electric Shift. Some parts are going to be hard to find if you need them, and may cost many $$$$$. The 55 is loop charged, a revolutionary thing at the time. It will run on less gas than the Lark

Both motors were state of the art at the time. That was then and now is now.

Hello..

Thanks for the info there...I will probably stick with the Lark...the 55973C does look a bit complicated for me to work on, as a novice "Cadet"..!!

Make sure the Lark's gearcase shifts and you get the controls with it.
