1969 evinrude 6 impeller size

I got a used 1969 evinrude 6hp and decided to change the water pump in it. I looked up the part number (0277181) and ordered one. Once I got the impeller housing apart the old impeller and inside the housing was much smaller than the new one and the new one couldn’t go down over the old impeller key. Should I go ahead and buy a whole new housing kit for it or is BRP wrong about the part number and I need to find the smaller impeller?

Not sure what you have.----Pictures needed.-----The 79 model came with a much smaller impeller.----That complete kit from 79 model can be installed on all of them down to 1955 model.------So just get the 79 impeller as it appears yours has the 79 pump installed.

There is a picture of the pump. Your saying if a bought the ‘79 impeller even though it is smaller I should have no cooling issues?

Makes plenty of sense to me and I’m glad I don’t have to buy a whole new housing now because the old one is in great shape. I appreciate it too I couldn’t find that info anywhere online.
