I own a 1969 Evinrude 85 Hp. Anyone know if this engine should have a overheating alarm that would sound if engine is running too hot? Also, how warm should the water be coming from the pee hole. My engien runs fine, but the water is HOT to the touch from the pee hole. Is this ok for this engine or should it only be warm?I assume not. I am thinking of pullign the lower unit to check impeller and water pump to be safe. Any comments appreciated....Chris

Chris,

I do not believe your engine has a telltale hole.

Yes, your engine has an overheat alarm. It is located in the control box-(gearshift/throttle control).

To test it:

1. Key on, engine off.

2. Ground the tan wire that is on each cylinder head. The alarm should sound.

If in doubt about the water pump, replace it.

Water pump cheap, powerhead-not.

Ummm, the warning may be a light, depends on
the control box he has on the motor (or the
wiring harness). Anyway, djohns is correct
in that grounding the wire that goes into the
head should set off whatever overheat alarm
you have.

BTW, I put a temperature gauge on the other half
of the block, just cause I like gauges and thought
it wouldn't be a bad idea to have some indication on
both halves of the block.

Mike
