1969 Evinrude 9.5 water pump

In trying to replace the gasket (13) under the bearing housing assembly (11), I cracked the bearing housing trying to pry it up and off the drive shaft. It would move about 1/4" and then stuck. Lubed, polished, and cleaned the drive shaft before trying to remove the housing.

Is there a secret that is not included in my Clymer (bad) Repair Manual?
