1969 Glasspar with 1986 Johnson 70.Intermittent Overheating Alarm and Starting Issues.

Good day to you all. I've been lurking on this site for a while now and definitely want to say thanks to all of you who lend advice and knowledge to those in need.

I recently acquired a new-to-me boat and outboard about a month ago for what to me seems like a good deal. I am having a couple of issues though when underway/under load. At home everything runs fine with the ear muffs and hose hooked up. But out on the water, I have intermittent starting issues after shutting her off and drifting for a little while, maybe 10/15 minutes. After waiting a little bit, she'll start up and run good again.

Another issue, which is the main concern I believe, is the overheating alarm will sound, constant annoying beep, and at first I would shut the motor off and within a minute or 2 shed start right back up and run good again. This last sunday though, both issues occurred at different times throughout the trip, and the last incident at the end of the day on the way back to the launch the alarm went off, I shut her down, and then motor wouldn't start. After drifting into a marina and getting beat up by the wake of other boaters for about 20/30 minutes she finally started back up and we were able to cruise back to the launch.

After that ordeal, I took her out for a night run that night & had no issues at all. I contacted the previous owner and he said those issues have never happend before and he suggested to remove the thermostat and to run it and see if the issues happen again...

So, now Im on here wondering what the iBoats gurus and Ol' Salts have to say. Thanks to any and all who chime in, I appreciate everybody's knowledge and opinions. Thank you.

A golden rule for ---" new to you outboard " ----Install a new impeller !-----Are you mixing at 50:1 gas oil ratio ?----Or is oil injection in service and checked out ?

Previous owner said he installed a new water pump and impeller recently, but maybe I should get in there and replace it anyways like your suggesting. And I am premixing 50:1.
