Recently acquired a 1969 Johnson 9R-69S. It starts, idles, runs etc. Except it is stuck in reverse. We are able to 'shift' on the handle but it stays in reverse or neutral. Any help is appreciated.

Check the joint between the upper and lower shift rods. They should both be inserted into the clamp ( and almost touch each other in the middle) so that the clamping bolts are located in the cutouts

One (or possibly both) of your shift rods is not located correctly in the clamp.

I would fix this ----Check the shift rod and connector now.----Install a new water pump impeller too.----Then you are ready for the lake.-----That motor does NOT have overheat warning or a " too hot " shutdown feature.----It will run till it is destroyed !
