:confused:1969 Merc 1250 Super BP
Serial # 2653983

I just changed the impeller because the gears were reversed when I got the boat. I figured as long as I had to drop the LU anyway, good time to change the impeller. GLAD I did! It was tattered.
New gear oil, and I read a few posts on the matter, and I got the link that shows the three positions on the rev. cam.
I need the manual but everything else has sucked up my boat money.
Anyway, when I put the LU back up the remote box didn't shift anything.
Everything shifted like it was supposed to in the LU when it was off.
I could use a couple of pointers if anyone has any!
Please!
Thank you,
Newbie to this site, but I sure like It!

You need to drop the unit down and shift it into rev. then put the shift box in rev and reinstall the unit

Allright, I'll give that a try. Today I was redoing the wiring to the lights and bilge pump and working the crud off the bottom of the boat. I didn't want to mess anything up.
Thanks, I'll let you know how it goes.

I need to know how to tell when the cables on the motor are adjusted properly. Neutral gear seems to be about 3/4 of the way toward the rear stop on the remote.
Also to adjust them,
does one unfasten the rubber clip at the front of the motor, pull out and spin the brass barrels, or do you actually unfasten the end of the cables themselves?

The reason I ask is: still no shifting when the LU is in place.
Is it possible that the splines are stripped on the gear shift connecting rod?
If so can the connector be changed?

Yes, I am going to get the service manual this weekend. Just throwing things out there for now.
Thanks for everyone on this site and all the great info y'all provide!

Mark, if it shifted before you removed the unit, then the problem is that you are off 1 spline with the shift shafts when reinstalling it. As far as adjusting cables, yes remove the rubber boot, release the cable barrel pull the cable out the front spin the barrel and reinstall.

If it is off by one spline....How can a guy tell when its just right?
Is that a stupid question?
Thanks,
