Hello all,

I'm rebuilding my carbs and while they are soaking I'm looking over the throttle pickup/distributor to prepare for the link and sync. I recently bought this motor, my first, and after a couple ok test runs on the lake I'm just getting around to checking timing and other tuning. My question is should the throttle continue to travel a significant way past max advance? Should the throttle move independently after max advance is reached? The whole throttle/distributor assembly seems to be one piece on mine. Is it stuck or will 34 degrees advanced be reached at WOT. In my mind it appears that once max advance is reached the distributor should stop but the top portion of the assembly keep moving, opening the carbs further. If there are two parts and they are frozen, any suggestions on breaking them free. Any comments or suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Re: 1969 mercury 1000 distributor/throttle pickup

well they say a picture is worth a thousand words....hopefully

section 1. and 2. rotate together when advancing throttle. when section 1. hits max advance stop (blue box) shouldn't section 2. continue to rotate until it hits max throttle stop or will both max occur simultanioulsly? on my distributor section 1. and 2. seem to only move together. are they stuck? thanks.

hopefully this is more clear than original post and sorry picture is cropped so tight. it's the only way I could get the file small enough to be allowed to upload it.

Well the answer is yes. Mine was just full of old sticky grease. It just took some working back and forth to free up. I put rebuilt carbs back on and did the link and sync, she's dialed in. Out on the lake last night she climbed out of the hole pretty quick and topped out at 35 mph. I was hoping for a little more power but I guess that's pretty good for a 40-year-old motor on a 40-year-old 16.5' Glasstron runabout. Maybe do a decarb and see if that opens her up a little more.

I've been waiting for an aswer to your question. I too have a similar problem, however my motor is a bit older than yours its a 1961 800, FGS. I aquired it last fall, its sat on display in a showroom for 35 years or so. I came to this site, last fall, and read up as much as I could around here, and I also got a manual for the 1965 and older mercs.
When I took the cowl off it, I noticed that the distributor section hit the
max timing advance stop, but came no where near the full throtle stop.
Due to that problem I felt I need to do a link and sinc to it. Yet I don't have the required mechanical timing tools. I was trying to set it up, so I could use clams link and sinc before I attempt to run it.
Now to the actual question I have...how EXACTLY did you free it up. IE did you spray and work it, or did you disassemble the unit? or ?

Thanks

Re: 1969 mercury 1000 distributor/throttle pickup

First I went on a guess and common sense from what I read that there must be two pieces. So....after staring at it for quite some time I finally got the nerve to mess with it. What do I have to lose right? I just used pliers on the "economizer collar" (top piece/throttle pickup) and turned it. When the bottom hit the max spark advance I just kept applying pressure and it very slowly let go. It was like it was glued because of the old grease. It really just took that initial movement to loosen up. Anyway just kept working it back and forth and pumped new grease into the zert.

I have had the same thoughts, why have two stops, ie max timing, and max throttle advance. Also on mine, it hit the max timing , at least a half inch before it would strike the max throttle, I was about to post the question, when I found yours.
From reading some of the threads here, I am a bit "leary" of using too much force on a part, that is now hard to find, and expensive when you do . I also wasn't to sure about spraying any type of lubricant. I'll give it a try tonight. As for grease, I did see some grease fitings, I guess regular grease would be ok to use.

Thanks

Yeah you can just pick up a tube of marine grease at the local hardware store.

Well went to camp..(cottage for those from the US etc) last night, gave the two nipples a shot of grease, gave a good push on the throttle....presto
the distribitor hit the stop, and the upper throttle opened up full.
One problem solved....on to the waterpump next.

Oncre again, thanks
