Hello Everybody. I Have A 1970 Caravelle Boat With The 165hp Inline 6 Mercruiser Sterndrive. The Boat Over Heats. I'm Pretty Sure It Might Be The Thermostat. But I Also Was Told It Could Be The Impeller. If The Engine Has A Belt Driven Water Pump, Would It Also Have An Impeller? Thank You For Your Time.

Yes, but it is most likely the raw water impeller in the drive unit that has gone bad......;)

How Difficult Is It To Replace The Impeller? Should The Thermostat Also Be Replaced? Thanks

It's not very difficult but a manual would make it even easier with proper steps and procedure. And a few parts. After ownership of boat should come a manual. Thermostat kit, new oil, and a water pump kit should do it unless the pump is burnt where the shaft does through then you may need a compleate housing water pump kit. I have a 165 also am in the process of getting a manual " it's a must" good luck!;) p.s. When you get the parts make sure you get the oil passage ring-seal between the upper and lower casings. Good luck ;)

not to bad.... yer gonna need a service manual though... ya need the same manual as starsnstripes... heres a thread about serive manuals...
http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=233677

i've replaced impellers while on the boat, and just recently, had the drive off and did the impeller. it is easier with the whole drive off. + ya get the chance to inspect other items like bellows, ujoint, gimble brgs and alignment + grease the drive shaft and ujoints....

Should The Thermostat Also Be Replaced?
The thermostat should be replaced after every overheat
why? other than yer gonna be there anyways removein impeller pieces and it's cheap insuance to R&R it..... ya can cook it in a pan whith a thermometer to see it work or not....

i'd be more worried about the rubber that got torched than the thermostat myself. the rubber being the impeller, the impeller housing, the guid tube, the waterpocket cover, impeller pieces washed thru the engine... yes, maybe gettin stuck in the t-stat, the riser to exhust pipe bellows and flapper.....

;) p.s. When you get the parts make sure you get the oil passage ring-seal between the upper and lower casings. Good luck ;)
yes, don't forget the quad ring.....most important.... if ya get yer service manaul and follow it, ya won't forget.....;)

Thermostats work off the thermal expansion of a pellet, usually wax. This material will sometimes flow and get between the shaft and the "pot" it sits in. Sometimes they will stick after an overheat sometimes not, is the reason why it needs to go away.

Re: 1970 165hp Sterndrive Cooling Question

Thanks for the back up Zig We've been there! At the risk of giving wrong info I'm trying to give a little back to Iboats and give others a little break. I'm sure some pros on here have answered that question many many times. Although I'm sure with the great monitoring here I'd be corrected.:D good post Zig, Istill havent figured out how to hightlight others sections like you did. When i do it it highlights the whole post haha.

Re: 1970 165hp Sterndrive Cooling Question

Overheats on those engines can be caused by any of the following.

Thermostat
Impeller
Engine water pump
Block exhaust elbow
Warped water cover cover (Better hope it ain't this one!)
Bad engine tune

What are the characteristics of the overheat? Does it overheat only at high speed or only at low speed etc?

its ok when at idle. but when i take off, it starts overheating and therefore i shut the engine off.

The FIRST thing to check on a boat overheat is the impeller.

That's because all it takes is a plastic bag, big seaweed, mud, or whatever to block the ports for a few seconds too long and you loose an impeller.
Sure, it can be a lot of other things. but probably over 90% of marine engine overheats is due to a bad raw water pump impeller.

Your problem sounds exactly like a dead impeller. Probably has only half (or less) of it's vanes because it's VERY OLD, and nobody ever did any maintenance on it.
Open it up and LOOK!

And because you've been running with severely restricted water flow, you may have cooked the water pocket cover. :( Once you have the drive split you can check it...
