1970 25 hp gearcase reseal ?

acording to my service manual you can't change the seal in the head assy.is this true and if so how can I tell if the old one is alright? also do I have to buy new bushing for the shiftrod, or can I just install new o-ring? thanks john

You just need to pop the washer out to change the propshaft seal.------------The o-ring for the shift rod can be changed without removing the bushing.--Most would scoff at that idea !--Tricky but can be done.---There is a special tool to remove the bushing.---Or run 5/16" tap into it and pull it out.-Bushing can be re-used.
