hello to every one on the forum panama in iowa is waven a hand.<br />i have just purchased my first boat 16 foot flat bottom with 25 h evinrude it goes real fast but clunks every minute or so, i read others have same problems i have (clutch dog??) so can anybody give me advice on the repair for this i called around in my town and i been given a price of 250 installed with used parts or 380 installed with new parts does this price sound fare ,<br /><br />also i was wondering if there is a adjustment to help out the problem for at least a while or just to try to see if it helped.<br /> im a good mechanic but he is only wanting bout 50 bucks to install but im not sure what to do, i did read just take it out and turn it around is this a possible fix? <br />thank you all very much for any advice,<br /><br /> panama

There is a good chance that you will need a new clutch dog, and forward gear. At this time of the night I am not in the shop to look up the price, or part numbers. If you get a service manual, this is not a difficult repair. The manual will guide you through the step's, plus tell you how to adjust the shift linkage. On a 1970 engine you will want new seal's also as long as you have it apart. If you run into a bind, come back here.

Definitely get the manual. The parts should be available at a dealer. You can likely have the job done by yourself for about $100 in parts, manual, and sealant. DO NOT run the motor until it's been fixed. The above assumes the forward gear is still usable and continuing to run it will damage the forward gear. You DO NOT want to have to replace the gears - very pricey...<br />- Scott
