1970 25hp Johnson lower paint question?

Hello, I just picked up my second 25hp Johnson , a 1970 for 150$. I bought it to use as a parts motor for my 1971 25hp Johnson but it’s so clean and runs good I’m stuck with the issue of having two great motors. I’ve apparently caught the itch to work on these older motors.
I Changed the gear oil, impeller, t-stat, and adjusted points. Got 125psi on both cylinders . It’s running better than my 71 with a low smooth idle....and pushes my 13’ Gregor 26mph...Although it sounds a bit different at higher RPM’s, higher pitched than my 71.
Anyway, I painted both cowlings and now looking for a close match on that green paint on the lower units of early 70’s Johnsons. I tried using OMC gold that I read was actually Johnson green for 1971. Well it’s gold but the 71 looks cool with that gold they painted some 50hp Jonnys in mid 70’s. I would like to paint the 1970 as close to original as possible. Anyone know a paint that is a close match? I can’t find OMC green anywhere online? Maybe an auto touch up paint green that matches? Thanks

Will do. It shipped today. I’m interested to see how the paint looks and holds up. Cool to see you also have a 70 25hp Johnson. I also have a 71. They are great motors once they are dialed in. I bought a service manual on eBay for cheap and it’s got good info along with YouTube and this forum

just thought I would update on the paint job. The paint arrived and got around to painting it few weeks ago. The paint seems to be holding up great and has nice finish. However it’s not an exact match to the original. It seems a lot “greener” in tiny. Overall I’m happy with it but if I would have to do it again, I would probably go with an automotive paint in forest green. Probably look the same as the paint now. I attached few pics of the completed job. Also a pic of my 71 25hp I painted with OMC paint coded Gold. It is definitely gold, not green like some people say it is. I’m happy both ended up looking clean , especially for their age.

For the lower I cleaned it using degreaser , then wet sanded, washed again , then just sprayed new paint on in 3-4 light coats with final being more wet. All within 10-15min apart.
For cowling, on the 70 the emblems were in decent good shape. One I fixed a crack using JB plastic weld then sanded to match. Wet sanded cowling then sprayed similar to lower but used krylon acrylic enamel automotive paint in white.
On the 71 the emblems were missing so I patched the small holes with JB plastic weld , then sanded to match . Sprayed same white paint and after few weeks put on decals I got cheap from e bay

Forgot to mention I also sprayed/applied vinegar on the lower unit after degreasing and sanding , especially on exposed metal areas- and let it sit for bit.
I read that apparently etches the metal and allows for better paint results. Figured it couldn’t hurt. Rinsed then applied paint.

Are you running different props? There is a chance one of the motors is turning higher RPMs or carb butterfly is not quite opening all the way on one of them. Could be reasons why they sound a bid different WOT.

the 71 was green but I accidentally purchased 2 cans of “gold” online and figured I would use it instead of dealing with trying to return it. Lesson learned but happy the way it turned out in the end.

The 71 has a larger prop than the stock one on the 70. The 71 prop was on it when I bought it. The numbers are worn out. I ran the 71 prop on the 70 and it sounded the same. I’m going to pick up a tach one of these days and check. I’ll also check the butterfly on the 71 next time I have the carb off. I was having issues with the link and sync on the 71 . I may need to adjust the cam plate and move it out a bit. Over all though both are running great and will prob leave them be until service is needed next

What are the model # of the 2 motors ?-----And does the serial # and model # from the disc on the block match the number on the transom bracket.

The model number on the 1970 is 25R70E . The model and SN match the disc on the block and the number on the transom bracket.
The 1971 is missing the number on the transom bracket and the disc on the block doesn’t show the model # it only lists a series of number (large M) then E3434678. It came with the 13’ 1976 Gregor I bought last year.
The paint on the 71 was the Johnson green before I painted it gold. The cowl matched pictures of 1971 25hp’s I saw online. (Old Johnson ads and YouTube videos of 1971’s). Based on what I found, the unique cowl for the 71 only lasted one year before they changed around the badges/placards.
Who knows if the block was swapped out but it’s green and doesn’t appear to be different from inside of cowling.

I thought the 71 models were green and not gold like 72 and newer ?
I am working on a 73 25hp Evinrude and it's blue.mayber were just talking Johnson here. I'm too lazy to go back through the earlier but that's what I suspect since there is a picture after this post of a Johnson

I have a can of the dark blue rude paint in my cabinet right now. It's what I used on my 60HP. But he is right you can look it up online at any parts site. If I remember i will looking the morning if I remember or I could look it up on line in less than five minutes burning about to watch tv and I don't feel like it right now.
