I just purchased a 1970 Evinrude 6 hp, mod #6002B, runs and starts great, only problem is it dosn't pump water at idle. last owner said had impeller replaced. pumps good at higher rpm. I removed lower unit to inspect pump, impeller housing is pitted bad in spots, is this likely cause of my low rpm water pumping problem? gromets and water pipe are good.

Greatful for any info.

That definetely could be a major part of the issue.

It's best to replace the pump as a kit. Especially if it is showing wear.

I use OEM parts. More expensive but worth it, in my opinion.

DJ,

Thanks for the reply, that is the only thing I can come up with, so I already ordered new housing and impeller. At least these things are easy to work on, Dont want to ruin this motor, it shot a cloud of steam when speeded up rpm's and pump re primed, hopefully did not damage any thing.

Check the thermostat too - its located on the top of the head. Look for a triangular plate with three bolts in it.
