Hello I have a 55HP Chrysler motor Im thinking its a 1970, model 557HA, the problem Im having is that the motor has good compression, turns over nicely, but there is no spark to the coils nor the plugs. can anyone please help, Thanks in advance
1. This inspection is the best starting point to look for fire issues. You might see the problem when you rem the flywheel before you touch a thing.
2. I have a 1970 35 HP (probably the same as your 55 HP) except for the HP (35-55 in the related series). I have owned it since 1984 and it has been tough and simple related to keeping it tuned. Attached is a pic of the Mag Sys on my 35 HP.
3. I hope the flywheel will be come off friendly as mine has always w/o any extra work. The Clymer Manual suggested using a large screwdriver or bar to lock the flywheels teeth using the motor?s/block. I did not like the idea which probably never caused any damages. I use a .5 thick aluminum bar (already on hand for etc) over flywheel?s smaller bolts (attached). What are other ideas as impacts wenches coming off vs on?
4. The puller has grown since the mid 70 for wherever needs. LOL!
5. Clymer shows 35 HP at 45 Ft Lbs and 45-55 HP at 80 Ft lbs.
thanks alot for getting back so fast, i will try pulling the fly wheel and start there, can i see if its getting spark at the points, or anywhere under the fly wheel first?
?but there is no spark to the coils nor the plugs.? Please explain your ref to coils in that state ment, if you have not pulled your flywheel. If you do see coils, please post close full pics of your motor with the cover off and one full length from one side (full eng down to the prop).
The plugs wire and plugs are the normal places to check for fire IMO. A good ground is a must to get a good spark in checking for fire. A good in-line spark tester will allow you to know your plugs are firing under compression in the cylinder. At 6.00 (for low end testers) it?s hard for me to believe but they appear to be working.
