1970 Evinrude 40 hp

I have an 1970 Evinrude 40 hp model 40052-A, Other than changing the sprark plug what other basic maintance can I do to get it running like the day it was new. Is it safe to spray the motor with some form of carb. cleaner. Is it possible to rebuild this motor with a kit( is one avail.). or maybe overhaul it.<br /><br />Thanks,<br />Paul- Houston, Texas

when was the last time it was run for any length of time. do not use starting spray to try to start it. if its been a while use the red search at the top of this page. search for ' awakening a sleeping motor' by joe reeves. it's got 99.9% of what you need to get it back to a real life. the engines are great and hard to kill.
