1970 Evinrude 40hp 40072A...water impeller replacement

Hello....

I have removed the lower gear case from my 1970 Evinrude Lark to replace the impeller....but I noticed that the drive shaft rotates freely and comes out, but does not turn the propeller shaft..is this normal ..? Is it because the engine was in Neutral position..? or has the gear box got a fault..? Thanks for any ideas.

It was probably in neutral. Try shifting it once and see what happens.
