Hey guys! I’m new to the forum, but have been watching the topics for quite some time on the same model engine. I have a 1970 Evinrude 40HP Big Twin Model 40052A. I have recently replaced Points, Condensers, Coils, Spark Plug Leads with new ends, And Spark Plugs. Now, I pulled the carb off (haven’t had it off since I bought boat last year) and notice the whole auto choke assembly is not there. Never noticed any hard starting when I bought the boat But I didn’t use it much at all. But after everything I have done, I haven’t tried starting it until I get everything 100% done. Is there anywhere I can purchase the whole choke assembly? Or does anyone on here have a used one for sale? I have every gasket to rebuild that came in the kit. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Since it’s missing I have no idea what parts I actually need for it or I’d just go on marine engine for the part #’s lol.

Hm-m-m-m-m. The choke involves all the parts shown below, plus the heat exchanger in the exhaust cover. Methinks it would cost a fortune to buy it all piecemeal, even if it is still all available. I suppose your best chance is to find a complete used carburetor for a lot less $$$$. Or just get along without it.

Are you telling us the manual choke is missing also? That would be sort of a problem.

Sorry, the actual lever is there (the one that changes it from auto, manual and off) but the butterfly and everything is gone. I’m from British Columbia

There's gotta be a good used carb out there someplace. Try a classified want ad at the Antique Outboard Motor Club. www.aomci.org The ad is free

If you want to go the easy way, with new parts, the following pieces should get the manual choke working. Then open the door, put it on choke on, start the motor, and flip it to choke off. One time in the morning is usually all it takes.

1--379491 choke shaft
1- 378003 arm
1- 304572 screw
1- 302674 butterfly valve
2- 312852 screws

Be sure to put a drop of lock-tite on the butterfly screws

okay! i may have found a used one from evinrudeparts.ca! thanks again racerone and F_R .. now while i wait i am removing the gearcase to replace impeller, and do a bit of a lower end service. i attempted to remove it tonight, but stumbled across the shift linkage holding it up, i thought it was like a standard outboard and just slide it off in neutral (boy was i wrong), but for some reason the linkage comes out about an inch and then gets hung up. i didnt want to pry and break anything, but am i missing something? is there a retaining bolt somewhere that i am missing?

On the side of the midsection, you will find an access plate held on by two screws. Remove that and you will find another one inside. Remove that one also. Now peer inside and you will see the brass shift rod connector. Remove the lower screw from the connector. Now the lower unit will come off.

WARNING: Putting it back together is important. Go ahead and bolt the lower unit back up. Now use a flashlight to peer in and make sure the notch in the shift rod is EXACTLY aligned with the hole in the connector. Install and tighten the screw. If not aligned, the screw will drag on the side of the notch and wipe the threads off the screw. Then it will fall out. But never at dockside, but always 5 miles out.

Correct.------Replaced a screw last year that had fallen out of the connector.
