1970 Evinrude 60 model 60073B help/advice needed

I have seen a post similar to this, but it was from 2008 and not sure if anyone still reads it. I got a great deal on a boat and trailer at an auction. Was told the motor ran. It does. I am very new to boating and especially outboard motors (I hooked up the fuel lines backwards and couldn't figure out why it wasn't getting fuel). I took it out and it started. Smoked A LOT.. and then after adjusting the choke I got the smoke to calm down to match that of other outboards I saw around me. I went for a test spin, just a small circle in case anything happened. When I tried to accelerate in gear the motor fell on it's face and shut off.

I have since discovered the sticky thread titled TOP SECRET where I have found some useful information. I have found out that my water pump is not pumping water, I replaced the plugs with the QL77 marine plugs gapped at 30-35'ish and I am replacing the impeller in the pump. I am puzzled at why everyone here is saying to fill the lower unit from the bottom hole. Is this not similar to a manual transmission with a fill plug and drain plug? Would you not get the same result capping the drain plug and filling from the top?

After replacing the plugs mixing some new ethanol free gas at a 50:1 ratio I started the motor using the ear muff looking things. (This is when I discovered that I had water going in and nothing coming back out). I had the same stalling results as before. Any help would be very appreciated. I am searching for a repair/service manual, but keep running into ones that I see people saying to stay away from. Thank you in advance.

this model does not have a **** hole the water pumped from the impeller goes into the motor & discharges the water back through the impeller housing , so the water that gets sucked up from the impeller goes into the housing towards the back end .& the discharge goes to the propeller end , to make it simple where the water comes into the leg the discharge water goes back there ,

i would strip the carbs & clean , adjust air screws to start of with , make sure its not sucking air some where in the fuel lines ,check fuel pump

these are good motors its worh restoring it , have a look what can be done

Ahhh, thank you so much. So I might not have done any damage by running the engine the first time out. Still replacing impeller after reading other threads, but comforting to know. Thank you.

fit a **** hole , i did this to my 60073d model

fit a **** hole then you know for sure your impeller is working , other wise you have to idle the motor & put your hand on it to feel if it is not getting hot

Also, if you have not deduced this already, you fill the gear case from the bottom so you know when it full (there is no dipstick).

Pull both plugs and drain. Inspect old oil for contaminants.
Insert fill tube in bottom. Pump until oil comes out the top.
Replace top plug.
Remove filler and quickly replace bottom plug (vacuum will help hold oil in).

I suppose you could fill from the top, but then you would have to measure the oil that goes in, or fill with a very small tube very slowly. From the bottom makes it so much easier.
