I just purchased a 1970 Evinrude 60 hp , and I bought a rectifier from a local shop and it has two Yellow leads and one red but my original has a yellow /grey and yellow and red . So my question is did I get the wrong part or is this something that has changed over the years and if so how do I know which yellow wire goes where? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your time

Yellow and yellow/grey are the same thing. Makes no difference.

Maybe you guys could lend me some advice I'm trying to restore spark, Im extremely green when it comes outboards with electric start. I have watched a lot of you tube video on testing the inginition components and bought the service manual.

That is the ciorrect rectifier.-------Start ignition trouble shooting by removing the flywheel.--------Inspect points and anti-reversing spring..

By now you probably have figured out that the factory service manual is obsolete. But it does have value in explaining how the system works----if you understand how electricity works.

If you thought the rectifier has anything to do with spark, you are barking up the wrong tree, as you probably now realize. I agree with racerone, the under-flywheel parts are basic maintenance. But even before that, make 150% sure the battery and cable connections are good, clean, and tight. Loose or corroded connections can cause $$$ damage to the ignition system.

Post some pictures of this motor.-----50 years old and likely wiring has been molested by previous owners.------Also test the shifting on this motor before spending big coins on it..-----Can be done on a non running motor.

The points need to touch at some time.-----When you rotate the flywheel they should open to a gap of 0.010".-----Your manual ( if a good one ) would have those details.

The amount of points gap at widest opening is critical on that motor.

Looks like the anti-reverse spring is missing.----When you assemble make sure you put the key on the rotor in the notch in the crankshaft.

And as far as checking if it shifts I do not see anything move when I push down the forward and reverse buttons I do hear a clicking noise . How do I tell if it is in neutral?

You will not see anything on the motor move during the shifting.------It is all a secret.-----The motor shifts when it is TURNING.-------It needs oil pressure from the pump in the lower unit.----Fill lower unit with type-C gear oil for electric shift.-------Remove sparkplugs.-------Push neutral button.----Turn key to on.----Turn crankshaft with socket on the nut.-----Should go to neutral after one turn of flywheel.------Push reverse and it should go through neutral and to reverse after 2 turns.
