I dug this motor out of the shed at camp. It hasn't been used in about 4 years. I put new plugs in her, and when pulling the cord I get no spark when holding the plug against the block. I pulled the flywheel and changed the condensors just because they're a lot cheaper than the coils, and still no spark. Before I shell out $50 for a set of new coils, is there any other reason there may be no spark? The coils don't have any apparent defects...no cracks etc. I hesitate to jump in and change them because it seems funny they would both go bad, and I would think if they were bad I'd get at least a weak spark from at least one of them. Is there anything to check prior to just replacing the coils?

Thanks

Might try changing the point sets also. These are a pretty simple set up. Make sure the connections are clean and no corrosion is around. Look under the coils for any black spots...this indicates the coils is jumping to ground....no spark at the plug.

And recheck the gag of the points....should be .020.

OBJ: I already re-gapped the points. All connections and wires look good. Is there any way to check the coils with an ohmeter or something?

you do have the throttle advanced up off the "stop" position, right? On those guys there's no kill switch. I might be wrong, but I think (?) that the ignition gets shorted out if the throttle is twisted all the way closed.

Are the points clean? Spotless clean? I typically run some 400-grit wet/dry folded over on itself for a 2-sided points cleaner. After running the 400 through the points until they are polished up, I run an index card dipped in carb cleaner or laquer thinner through them to clean out any grit, oils, etc.

Also, are they gapped correctly with the fiber rider aligned with the crankshaft keyway?

- Scott

Thanks for all the replies. I got spark tonite after following Chinewalker's advice. I had some 600 grit paper and polished the points. At first, I would get spark only during the first pull of the cord, then nothing on subsequent pulls. Polished some more and cleaned with compressed air. Now I'm getting pretty consistent spark. Glad i didn't shell out for those new coils.
