1970 Evinrude No spark and burnt part ID....

I found what my problem might be but why it happened might be a challenge to find out. As you can see on the left of the image the circuit board or what ever was to the left of the power block is charred and burnt up, it actually melted or caught fire right where all the wax like stuff that suppose to keep moisture out, obviously a circuit problem. I am thinking that this might just be a CDI or power pack that is burnt up if my research is correct....anyone please correct me if Im wrong? The motorola box doesn't look healthy either though it has bare wire all over the place and there is no place to splice since its bare right out of the box in a few places.

I guess I should clarify this is a 60 hp Evinrude, hyro electric motor, and is a 1970 model year. Thanks

I don't know if it is true or not but I hae heard that the clipper is actually not needed expecially if I go with a new CDI ignition box. Do you know whether this is correct?....Im trying to elimnate expense if possible. Also what would cause something like that?

What is the historty of the motor? The purpose of a voltage regulator is to prevent overcharging of the battery and/or erratic behaviour and/or damage ot electronic equipment. Don'y know hoe a newer CDI would effect that. The clipper must have had an internal short or bad ground. You should check the status of the stator before you incure any expense by buying parts. The heat may have also baked the coating off the stator windings. May have also cooked the rectifier.

I wish I knew the history of the motor I bought the boat trailer and motor as is for $300. as you can see from the pics it looks as though someone has been doing some rewiring which has me concerned. Well my research lead me to believe they were related apparently they aren't. How would I go about checking the stator besides just simple observations.

This is from the factory manual for my 71 evinrude 50hp:

CHECKING STATOR WINDINGS
- disconnect yellow and yellow/grey wires at terminal block.
- connect one ohmmeter lead to yellow and the other to ground to check for shorts ----> infinity on high ohms scale is good
- check the yellow/grey in the same manner
- check resistance on low ohm scale between yellow and yellow/grey lead ----> 1.5ohm good, infinity bad

Thanks that helps alot, I'll let you know what I find. Is there any other areas I should look at? The motorola box, which I think is the CDI looks terrible it has bare wires comming out of it and its been spliced numerous times, I plan on replacing it as well depending on how much money I will have to sink into it in order to get it running again. Thanks again Oldrudedud (awesome username)!

I would take apart the section of the wiring harness between the clipper and the CDI box to check on the rest of the wires in there. You might have to rebuild that part of the harness (a little labour but no big expense). I had to do that once on a motorcycle after inadvertently installing the battery with the poles reversed:facepalm:. It melted the wires but did not damage the electric components:redface:.

I will consult the manual on how to check the CDI and get back to you.

OK, turns out I was wrong about identifying the burned part. It is the original power pack. The Motorola must have been installed by a PO to replace it. I was under the impression that the thing burned on you when you tried to start it. I just read you previous thread and now it is a little more clear. The Motorola looks like a pulse pack from a later model. Don't know that it will work on your model but hers is how mu book says to test it:

- remove pulse pack purple lead from terminal #9, connect a low reading ammeter between the pulse pack putrple/black stripe lead and terminal #9.With key switch "ON" ammeter must show minimal current draw. Maximun current draw should be 0.7 amps.

Pulse pack output check: disconnect amplifier (coil) from blue lead from terminal #5. Connect neon tester (timing light) between amplifier blue lead and ground. While cranking engine, neon light should flicker indicating output ok.

The burn thing is the clipper according to the parts diagram I pulled up (Im pretty sure thats correct) and I think the Motorola Box is the amplifier (thats a good guess) it looks similair to the part listed in the. Whether it was replaced or not I couldnt tell you, but it doesnt look like it is original to me, I will take a better look at it this evening when I get home. I posed the part diagram that matches my engine model number.

For some reason the link is showing the gear case but you can easily navigate to the ignition system / distributor from there.

You are correct. My confusion stems from trying to use two different manuals of two different years for two different motort to understand the layout. Trying to do it at 1:45AM doesn't help either. The link above shows a parts list for your motor. Pretty expensive parts. The good thing is you aren't into it for a lot of doe yet.

I have a couple more manuals on CD that cover multiple years and engines for Evinrude/Johnson. I'll see what I can find for testing the amplifier.

Re: 1970 Evinrude No spark and burnt part ID....

From the manual:

Evinrude 60hp 3-cylinder 1970-1971

- has ignition points, amplifiier, ignition coils
- 12V power to the ignition is supplied by the battery through the points to the amplifier. The amplifier converts the 12V to 350V and supplies it to the primary circuit of the coils.
- Input to the amplifier should be attached to the #6 post on the terminal. With the ignition on there should be 12V at that #6 post. Should read at least 9.5V with the engine cranking.
- Amplifier output should be at #9 post on the terminal board. Should be at least 250V with the engine cranking.

Test voltage at those two terminals and post the results. There are 4 or 5 more tests you can do.

Re: 1970 Evinrude No spark and burnt part ID....

I went out and checked what I thought was the #6 power post. I am not getting power there but I am getting power to a lead going into the amplifier just beside what I would call #6...I will have to wait till I get a partner here to do the other test with the output lead. I guess to clarify when I am looking at the power terminals which way do I start counting and which is odd and eve. I am familiar with normal wiring in a house but I am just trying to orient myself when counting terminals on this engine and what order they go. Thanks

On those terminal boards the screws that are on each end are not counted. They are not terminals. They merely mount the terminal board to the engine. You start counting from the left or from the top depending on the orientation of the board.

I have a wiring diagram for your motor.:D I will try to post it as an attachment..... but I can't do it now bwcause my wife is bugging me to do other things. Maybe later tonight or in the morning.

Would you mind posting a few more of those ignition system tests, whenever you get a chance? I should be able to scratch my head and figure it out with the wiring diagram but it always helps to know the test procedures when I narrow it down.
