Hi there, I have almost finished restoring a 1950 dingy Italian speedboat and I have on a 1970 Johnson 20 hp outboard that I am looking forward to upgrade to electric starter as giving the distance of the motor from the driving seat it’s very inconvenient to have it started and switched off from the motor instead that from the console. I am sure this has already been asked several times but can you please direct me on exact what pieces I need to but and what I need to do? My boat has no battery at the moment (just to clarify). Tx a d happy boating to all! Ciao 👋

Most of them do have the ring gear for the starter already.----Picture of your flywheel ?-----You need the bracket for the starter and the starter motor.---------Solenoid / wiring and switch are easy to find.-----The bracket and starter are found on any 22 cubic inch model 18 ./ 20 /25 HP model from 1960 to 1976 model years.

Beats me where people are finding all the starter brackets. Seems like more people are looking for them than were ever produced in the first place. But keep looking, there's one out there somewhere.

That item looks like it fits post 1976 models and likely does not fit the 22 cubic inch motors.-----I should check and see if that 30 cubic inch bracket will bolt onto a 22 cubic inch block.-----Have a few of each.to try it.

Yes, I got a match on the part number for the bracket this morning ('77 25 hp), so will be curious to see what you come up with. I can't tell one from the other by looking at them and don't think I have anything stashed away.

i just had to keep my eye on craigslist and marketplace for any 22 cuber with electric start. they do pop up from people just trying to clear out garage space for next to nothing. i have 9 22's. only 2 had the electric start but didn't pay more than a hundred for any of them. there's an old omc specific boat yard by me that has a new one for ,(now hold on to your socks) 300 and used ones, (if you can find one) go for half that at 150 from salvage yards. scour the internet listings. might be the hardest starter bracket of all to find.
