1970 Johnson 9.5 pull rope and Pin

The pull rope on my 1970 9.5 Johnson broke yesterday, I also lost the roll pin (it was loose fitting) Got a new rope and pin. Instructions I have found have the pin already installed, if I put the pin in as it sits I cannot use the flathead to wind counter clockwise, but I can if the pin is out. How should I approach this?

I think I got it. I cranked in the screw counter clock wise and installed the pin and tied off the new rope, seems fine, although I should have replaced the plastic gear.
