Im about 3 hours from finishing my deck overhaul , and decide to try running her before we try to take her out this weekend . everything was working great the new impeller was moving a lot of water now and motor sounded great. only that after about the third time of up and down on the trim . it stopped working luckily in upward position.. the solenoid clicks . I tried putting jumpers on both blue and g reen wires and I got nothing so ultimately my ? is do I need to just replace pump since my solenoid Is still clicking.. and how can I find out how cubic inches my motor is I have the inline 6 gm motor merc cruiser alpha drive..or pre alpha if that exists..thanks in advance

Re: 1970 power trim ?

Your engine is a 250 cu in GM in line 6, know as a Mercruiser 165, the drive is a Mercruiser 1 drive, (know as 'MC-1'). (The Alpha One was from 1986 to 1990)

If you have a multimeter or test light you need to check that power is flowing through the solenoid. Put the test light (DMM) on the OUTPUT of the solenoid (Heavier BLUE wire and check for power when you trim UP. If it's there, then the motor is a problem. No power, solenoid is the problem. If the wiring is all original, then there is no solenoid fo rhte DOWN circuit, it's just straight through the switch panel.

I guess the wiring is original then I just made sense of your post . since it goes to switch panel thats why there is no click on DOWN circuit

Re: 1970 power trim ?

Don thanks for the link .. well i tried testing the circuit after the solenoid and i had voltage when hitting the buttons , so it sucks but motor is done.. luckily i seen a guy in my town taking his outdrive off a week ago and decided to ask whats going on yesterday and he is parting his boat out and wants 175 for his pump. better then 3 or 400. tight budget with getting divorced and all so hopefully this pump will do justice. thanks for both of your time ill update this with results from pump... i guess i do have another ? the trim guage on the dash doesnt work. but i mean do you really need it , does using that to see how much trim you have in matter. or is it more of "you have to feel it kind of thing." (My system was on page 303. up up/down down. three black button switch)

Thanks again.. Sammy

i stopped by the guy in my towns house to check out his pump and now he tells me that he was parting the boat out but is getting no hits on selling his motor so he might put it back together and will eventually need the trim pump ..
just frustrated that he put the pump on craigslist seperate from the motor he is selling and now im shafted from going out tomorrow .. and i have to find another pump..

Re: 1970 power trim ?

I think this sounds crazy but maybe you would no more. the service manual for the trim pump says if there is no power strong fluids available to use sae 10_30 w.. or sae 30w. does thus sound rite I mean the pump is from 1970 so I guess its possible for this to be true

Re: 1970 power trim ?

Look at where you read that. It probably says if the the Merc power steering, trim and tilt oil is not available, use 10w30.
