hello peeps new to iboats. first post. The motor is a 1970 seaking 55hp VWB20956A serial #101176. The motor was running good last week. I havent made any changes to motor at all. i ran it in a barrel last week no problems. turned it off. disconnected battery put it on charger. Went out this morning hooked up battery. try to start motor turns over good, got fuel, but no spark. Checked all connections , good, checked voltage at rectifier 12.7vdc on dc+ terminal, checked voltage an AC terminals (3 phase) phase to phase only getting 7.3vac. same voltage on trigger side of coils. Now last week same conditions but motor started and ran fine. this week motor has no spark. what should voltage be on stator leads phase to phase? pulled fly wheel, points look new, condensors look new. checked all terminals , good , so at this point im stummped. i am a industrial mechanic and have pretty good gas motor understanding but have not messed with outboards much. any help you guys could provide would be great.

Thank you
Robert

What kind of ignition system does it have?
Battery or magneto?
Battery need power from battery to work, magneto use magnets in flywheel.

Battry ignition: Do you have 12VDC at blue wire at terminalstrip when try to start.

Magneto: The two M termials at keyswitch are shortet when stoping the engine.
Check that there are no shortcut at M terminals when try to start.

Do you have a lanyard?
This will short the engine out when tripped.

Loose wire on the key switch.
Probably no lanyard/killswitch on something that old.
Check the timing and see if the flywheel key hasn't sheared??

thanks guys,

it was flooded out. which i need a carb rebuild kit for. im going to see if i can find one here. had it out all day today, would run fine then it would load up and bogg downand flood out till it died. i would disconnect fuel line then start and run till the bowl was empty. then i would reconnect fuel line and start and run fine till it flooded out again.

still no change in stator output voltage though. checked all wiring and no landyard kill switch on this one just keyed ignition with electric choke, which all wired properly. i am licensed journeyman electrician as well as industrial mechanic so im thinking the stator is bad. i just dont know what kinda AC voltage the stator should be putting out. Im thinking i should have 13vdc to 14vdc at the rectifier dc terminal and it only has about 12.7VDC today.

Contact CDI Ignition and ask them about specs on the stator.
No pics.
A no charge could be the regulator.
