Hi to all. New here and I can use some help.

I thought it would be cool to take grandpas old out board and use it on the lake at the summer house. it is an 1970 Evinrude 9.5 Sport Twin.

I got it running and restored it back to it's original condition. It looks great, but it won't idle very well. Seems to hiccup at low idle and want to stall if I don't play with the throttle.

New plugs tgapped to 0.0.35, I puleed the carb and cleaned it and that is about it.

Also can somebody tell me a good place to get parts?

Thanks alot. This has been a great winter project!!

Re: 1970 Sport Twin

You should have new Champion spark plugs, set at .030 .

(Carburetor Adjustment - Single S/S Adjustable Needle Valve)
(J. Reeves)

Initial setting is: Slow speed = seat gently, then open 1-1/2 turns.

Start engine and set the rpms to where it just stays running. In segments of 1/8 turns, start to turn the S/S needle valve in. Wait a few seconds for the engine to respond. As you turn the valve in, the rpms will increase. Lower the rpms again to where the engine will just stay running.

Eventually you'll hit the point where the engine wants to die out or it will spit back (sounds like a mild backfire). At that point, back out the valve 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn, you'll find the smoothest slow speed setting.

Note: As a final double check setting of the slow speed valve(s), if the engine has more than one carburetor, do not attempt to gradually adjust all of the valves/carburetors at the same time. Do one at a time until you hit the above response (die out or spit back), then go on to the next valve/carburetor. It may be necessary to back out "all" of the slow speed adjustable needle valves 1/8 turn before doing this final adjustment due to the fact that one of the valves might be initially set ever so slightly lean.

When you have finished the above adjustment, you will have no reason to move them again unless the carburetor fouls/gums up from sitting, in which case you would be required to remove, clean, and rebuild the carburetor anyway.

Thanks Joe. Can you tell me where I can get a set of points for this? I believe they should be set @.020.

Thanks again for the quick response..

Re: 1970 Sport Twin

I'd assume that they would be available right here on iboats. The regular part number is 580148 but Sierra also has them under their own number. With the flywheel key aligned with the fiber portion of the points, set them so that a 020 gauge will pass thru but a .022 will not.

Could be that your jets are clogged in the carb from sitting so long. Wouldn't hurt to do a carb rebuild if you haven't already. Also, it may be a good idea to replace that impeller if you're unsure of its condition.

Re: 1970 Sport Twin

Thanks for all the help so far. Took it out yesterday and the motor Idles good. Seems noe that when I go full throttle the motor bogs down a little. At first it was surging. Now it is just bogging down and not reaching full speed.

Any help is appreciated!!

Check the ignition and spark plugs. You are running on one cylinder. Coils are a very likely suspect.
