Hey everyone,
I have four 1970s 4hp johnson/evinrude motors (70, 71, 76, and 78) I was wondering if the fuel pumps are compatible. The only difference is that on the 78 it uses the top and bottom bolts on the pump to attach it to the engine. On the other three motors the fuel pump mounts to the motor using the bolts on the left and right. I'm not sure if my spare fuel pump would work with the 78 because I would basically be mounting it sideways (I think I could get the gas lines to it in a pinch). Would mounting my spare like that on the 78 work?

They should all be the same pump, however the outer cap that is held in by a single coin sloted screw can be rotated in 4 different 90 degree locations, this allows you to mount it in diffent ways but yet have your fuel lines attach.

 Thanks for your help, once you explained I looked at it again it's pretty obvious. That's what happens when you're working on outboards at 1 AM.
