For the larger inlines are all 3 dog clutch and reverse gears interchangeable? I can't find any exact replacements (part #s) but all appear to use the same sliding clutch and straight toothed reverse gear. I found shift cam and cam follower. Gonna tackle this lower unit and get reverse back. Thanks.

You should be able to check part numbers on the crowleymarine.com web site, for several models.

With the price of gears, you might look into a used lower unit.

What part of NJ are you from?

NJC are initials...actually in MN. Twin Cities area. Yeah I've been contemplating that and there are plenty of used ones around here. Plus swapping lower units would be a heck of a lot easier than redoing lower unit. I guess it would be a good learning experience though. Just don't want to buy one and have to do the same thing shortly. Also I have an extra lower unit from 1969 merc 1000 but reverse out as well (seems like a common issue). Any years better than others that'll bolt on?

The later gearcases had the stainless steel driveshafts. I never heard that one was better than the other, however.

Thanks again Chris. I've decided to go with a complete gearcase. Up to what year will work?

I would think that gearcases from 1970-1988, inline 4 and 6 cylinder gearcases will fit. The range is likely greater, but I am not sure of models other that those. some of the IL 4 cylinder gearcases have a 2.3::1 gear ratio. This will work, but you will need a prop with 2" more pitch to compensate.

Check out new gearcases from SEI. They might be just a bit more $ than used.
