Does a my '71 Evinrude have a teletale? Model # 125183C. I had it running when I bought the boat and didnt see one, but it did have warm water exiting the exhaust. Im guessing this model motor doesnt have one but just making sure.

If not, does it have a thermostate? How will I know if Im having overheating issues?

Also, does this motor have a generator?

Thanks!
Jeff

Sorry I forgot to state what I was refering to.

Can I add a telltale to my motor without pulling the head? Or do I risk getting metal in water jackets?

Most telltales are plumbed into the outer exhaust cover. You can remove the cover, drill and tap it, then replace it. You may also find that purchasing a used cover from a 1978-1996 engine is just as easy. They are interchangeable. A telltale will tell you that your water pump is working, but it can still overheat-even with a strong telltale. Your engine has a vernatherm which acts as the thermostat. Start your engine when it is cold. Hold your hand close behind the two exhaust relieve ports at the top of the exhaust housing. After a minute of running, the thermostat will open. When it does, your hand will start to accumulate water droplets from the water mist in the exhaust. Your engine is equipped with an alternator to recharge the battery.
