Recently acquired a 71 125 johnson in fantastic condition with great compression with a big problem, somebody cut the plug off of the wiring harness of the motor. All I have is 10 wires. Havn't had much luck finding a shifter. Does anyone know if the original shifter had a 10 wire plug? Is it a black plug? Saw a similar johnson on ebay with evinrude shifter, can other shifters be used? Thanks Brickster

Re: 1971 125 hp shifter search

You can look at the factory exploded parts diagrams at this website: epc.brp.com It shows the main wiring harness and will also show the difference between the Evinrude pushbutton shifter and the more "normal" single handle shifter of the Johnson. Either type of shifter will connnect to the engine's main wiring harness connnector. If you need a wiring diagram, it's likely found in the original factory service manual. If you need to order one, checkout this website: outboardbooks.com
