Preparing to replace oil pump, Unit drained, looking down the solenoid chamber and a rubber seal looks dangerously close to the small hole for the shift plunger rod, as if it might interfere with proper connection. Could anybody tell me if this is normal or if it could a problem. I assume it is the valve housing seal, should it be replaced? Thanks for your help 1971 125 hp johnson

Im not sure and it doesn't say much in the johnson service manual, but it doesn,t seem as if it should be so far into the solenoid chamber. Have new oil pump and ordered new seal, hopefully this was a reason for my no shift issue.

That seal should not be near the valve levers.------Why are you replacing the oil pump ?----Was the shift piston bore damaged ?

We had talked the other day and decided since the unit would not come out of neutral and had the right power supplied to the knife connectors that it was possibly a oil pump piston problem.
