1971 18hp Tiller.... convert to remote steer?

Is it possible (and not outrageously difficult) to convert my Evinrude '71 18hp short shaft tiller to a remote steer?

Not at all. If you have the correct equipment, it should all hook up easily without any modifications.

you'll need some clips. there are 2 styles:

get them from ebay,

or new from evinrude, PN 173617 lists for $39.99 (dealer cost is $27.19)

Oops I didn't mention those. A lot of those motors will already have them mounted by the time we get ahold of them, but sometimes not.

remote throttle/shift, that uses type 400 johnson cables.

then you need to decide type steering, wheel or stick steering, you will need the complete set.

also you motor does not have a tilt tube so i recommend one of these adapters
