1971 40HP Johnson

This motor Mod.40E-71G Ser.J3454002 has electric start but no charging system I can find. Has some one removed it or did thay come this way? Found a plate with a regulator and diodes on it in live well. Looks like part of motor but cant make it fit any were and the flywheel has what look like a cog belt pully at top but theres no Gen./Alt. to be found. HELP!

As far as I can find, the 40hp in that year range was a work horse motor, It was called a "commercial", using most of the parts of the 35hp, with a starter, but no charging system.<br /><br />Many were used as a "jet drive" unit on older aluminum sleds. I have one I rebuilt & put the charging system off a 35hp on.<br /><br />The box you find on the boat is the starter selinoid system.

Machinist<br /> A ford type starter sol. is hook to the starter looks factory? This plate has a gen. type regulator marked field/Arm./Bat.?
