Hi, I have a 1971 50 hp evinrude (50173S) that doesn't spark. Don't know much about these stator ignition systems. Is there a way to disable the kill circuit to see if there's an easy fix?

Disconnect wire ( black / yellow stripe ) on the cd box and see if there is now a spark.

no, still no spark with the wire disconnected. Is there any other simple 'fix' I can try or is it a stator/power pack problem?

Go to cdielectronics.com for good trouble shooting procedures.

Hi, I went to the cdi site but couldn't get too far into the trouble shooting due to not having a DVA adapter. There is still no spark with the rectifier wires disconnected. In the meantime I've obtained a parts motor with a functioning ignition system (so I'm told) so I'll start swapping bits over. Does it make sense to start with the power pack or the stator or something else? - the power pack changeover seems to be a more straightforward operation than the stator - are there any 'pitfalls' I should look out for while doing these swap overs? As mentioned earlier, I've no experience with this type of ignition system.

I guess I'm talking to myself but what the heck. I think I got lucky with the power pack switch over. I now have spark ... it jumps a good ways but seems thinner somehow than the spark I'm used to from a magneto/points system - does that make any sense? I'll try to get it on the water today to start it. Hopefully that push button gear shifting will work ok.

Yep, happy to say it fired up and ran quite nicely - the push button shifting worked well. I was surprised at how much more power a 50 hp has compared to a 40 hp.

This post is 4 years old but I'm currently looking anywhere for answers myself. I purchased a 1971 Evinrude 50 hp from a guy that couldnt get spark as well. I've replaced everything and still getting nothing . Power pack , stator , timer base , rectifier , both could packs plugs , control box... You name it and I'm getting nothing. As I ohm everything it all checked bad so I replaced it all. Even have a wiring diagram for it and made sure everything was right . Next step going to get a test light and make sure I'm getting power through everything still. Really at a lose here and if anyone had some input that would be great.

12 volts from the battery is not used to get spark on this ignition system.-----Spark is made by the magneto when it is spinning fast.----Oh----Start a new thread cause they will likely close you down !
