1971 50hp johnson popwer up problem

i recently inherited a 1971 cacci craft with a 1971 50 hp johnson. boat sat for 6 ys i changed feul and it started right up. went out 6 times ..all day . motor ran great but last time out it stalled and had to get a tow. at home out of the water with water hose hooked up it runs good . in water out of gear it runs good but when i power up it sputters and acts like it has a fuel restriction problem will not plane off and eventually will barely go at full throttle if i sit a while it will run good at slow speed but when i power up it sputters and bogs and will barely go again then is hard to start any help? thanks

Classic symtoms;
As is the case with a lot of motors that sit for a long time the fuel system is most likely gunked up.
Rebuild the carb with special attention to passages and jets and check the fuel system from tank to carb with special attention to cleaning.You should also change the impeller in the water pump.

Welcome Steve!

What I would strongly recommend is a through carb over haul. Soak them out in carb cleaner and install new OEM kits. Setting that long, the carbs have probably become fouled with varnish from the gas that was left in them. I would also change out the fuel lines. Bet they are hard as rock.
