I just got this boat so bear with me. I put the water muffs on it to start it up. I have water from the hose running out the the props exhaust and just above the the gear housing. But no place up high is showing water and after a few minutes of run time the heads felt hot to the touch. How can I tell if its pumping its own water and were should it be? I did the same thing to the kicker (1986 evinrude) 9.9 and its tell tale was not flowing either. wouldnt water from the hose come out there as well? Or do I have a set of bad impellars?

I didn't see a tell-tale in the parts breakdown, but you can install one.
I would suggest you drop the lower unit and install a water pump, make sure to check your thermostat.

Your motor doesn't have a tell tale. Do a search on the Johnson/Evinrude threads and you should come up with several that discuss how to install one. I put one in my '72 Johnson 65hp motor.

Ok, there are two small ports just below the cowling that I asume are some form of exhaust relief? When idling the motor on muffs is water supposed to come out there or only when lower unit is submerged? I cannot even feel exhaust coming out of the port. but its blowing good water out the prop.
