I recently purchased a 1971 6hp for a kicker.
I notice there is no tilt lock.
Without one it drags along behind the boat.
Is there a part for this?

I can't say for sure 100% but not likely. On my old 5.5 I had the same problem. When I used the 55hp I had to drag it along but really couldn't tell it was there. What I have seen many do is mount the kicker on a special hinged mounting plate that will have the kicker up in the air until needed, then dropped into the water. On mine I did not go that route as I did not plan on keeping the 5.5 on there that long and actually used the kicker most of the time on local lake. I needed a longer shaft motor and found an 8hp that does have a lock as well as more length and power.

here is one example. You can find them used on Ebay and other places too.

My '75 has a tilt lock ...if you mean to lock it in a tilted position and NOT to lock or release it so it can/can't be tilted.

You could tighten up the nut on the tilt bolt to make it harder to tilt, might hold it up for you.

This. You motor has a heavy spring under the nut that is located on the starboard side of the tilt bolt. It is there to allow you to adjust tension on the nut and control tilt.

My experience in using a '69 Johnson 6hp as a kicker for many years is that this helps, but isn't enough. I have used a long bungee run from an aft rail cleat, around the back of the lower cowl, to a small cleat that I mounted on the splash well. A piece of line with something wrapped around it to prevent chaffing, works well too.

Good info, kind of sounds like a pain though. I may look to fabricate a bracket. All the pounding my Montauk does will surley cut that motor loose.

How about a stick? For years, I've simply slid a stick under the yoke of the clamp bracket when tilted up. A 1-foot long piece of 1x1 works fine... If you don't want to lose it, put an eye in one end and tie a string to it.

The tilt adjustment pin on that motor has a spring assembly attached to it. Putting a board under it, tends to bend things. The motor will also move enough underway, if not tied down, for the board to fall out constantly.
