I've got a 71 Chrysler 45Hp outboard. After sitting for a few years I decided to run the boat. I replaced one coil, rebuilt the carb, cleaned and checked the points, new vacuum/fuel lines and new spark plugs. Got the engine running in a barrel and took it to the lake. It ran pretty good for about 30 minutes, pulled it out of the water and went home. Next day I put it in and it wouldn't start. Pulled the flywheel and rechecked timing and points, took carb off and cleaned it again, checked the fuel pump to make sure it is pumping, checked compression (no change from before). It has spark and fuel going to the carb, but it will not start. Tried spraying starting fluid (I know you shouldn't do this, but I wanted to see if it would fire) and it will pop but will not run. I have been working on this for 2 days and made no progress. I am all out of ideas. Can anyone help? Thank you in advance.

Check the flywheel key?
Where's the air screw set?( 1 1/2 turns for initial setting)

Compression test?

Flywheel key has not been sheared.
Air screw at 1 1/2 turns out from seated position.
Compression is 95 & 92 on cylinders.

Are you using a good compression gauge? A good brand? 92 and 95 isn't very good. Also, do you have a good hot spark?

I would think the gauge is descent quality, but I would think that would be irrelevant since the numbers didn’t change from before and it ran fine.

I have spark and it looks to be strong. How can you tell good spark from bad spark?

If it pops while using starting fluid but not run, there is a fuel issue.
Clean the carb once again and when carb is away from intake manifold check the reeds.

Nordin: The last time I had the carb off, I looked into the manifold and looked at the reeds. They are there and they are not stiff. Other than that, I wouldn't know what to look for.

Redbarron%%: I will look into that article. But I am getting spark.

59 Evinrude: The pedals should rest at the casting without any gap, you can tolerate 0,003 in gap no more.

My advise is to clean the carb once again.
Check the fuel needle valve if stuck, also check fuel line coupling if you have one between engine and primer bulb.

Redbarron%%: This engine does not have a CDI ignition, it has magneto or battery ignition with points.
As it pops when using starting fluid it is a fuel issue.

i will pull the carb and clean it again. I will also check the reeds when I am in there. Thanks for all of the help!
