Hello,

we just bought a Boat with 1971 Evinrude 100 Hp 4-cyl Outboard. We have a new battery, new spark plugs, New fuel pump, new fuel line, And we have redid the wiring to the battery.

When we got it, it didn’t run for a year, the guy said it needed a new fuel pump.

we tested it at home and it ran, tested it at the lake and while we were half throttle it just died (assuming we lost spark) and then it started back up, it also runs a little rough at low rpm. Then we tried it again another time at the lake and it would turn over but not start. And since then we have had a hard time getting it to run.

we have also noticed that when it does run, we hear a buzzing or electrical sound when the key is forward for when you want to turn it on and then it goes away once the engine is running. But we noticed that whenever we dont hear that buzzing noise that the boat Won’t run!

we are stumped!!

Some steps to take.----Remove the flywheel.-------Remove distributor cap and rotor.------Inspect anti-reversing spring.---Set points to 0.010".----Clean distributor cap and rotor.-----Assemble and test for spark.----Plus I would do a complete evaluation of this motor before spending any money.------If the motor is deemed in good condition you should install a new water pump impeller before using the motor again.

Is there anything special we need to do when removing the flywheel for the timing marks?

Nothing on the flywheel has to do with timing.---just put the flywheel back on key and torque to 102.5 FT-LBS.

We took off the flywheel and everything like you said, everything looked fine, and we cleaned it up. We went to go try it and it still didn’t run, and we had the key forward with the battery hooked up For awhile and Then we started to hear the electrical buzzing type noise from the engine. And so we hooked up the water and tested it and it started right up.

took it up to the lake to test drive it and it was running wayyy better than before and had no issues, other than maybe a stutter at one point.

today we trying to leave the key forward with the battery hooked up and seeing if that sound comes back on. Not sure what to think. Do you think could be a bad power pack problem?
